As
a youngster, Karen Commings loved to draw and paint, taking
instruction from various teachers in charcoal, pastel, and
oil painting. She entered Penn State as a Fine Arts major
but gave up her artistic pursuits in favor of a bachelor’s
degree in Art History. She earned a master’s in Library
Science at the University of Pittsburgh and spent the next
twenty or so years organizing and retrieving information in
various types of libraries. After 35 years away from
painting, she took brush to canvas once again in early 2007,
finding inspiration in such things as dream images, Hubble
space telescope photos, and the natural world. She won
second place in the acrylics category at the fall 2007
member show at the Art Association of Harrisburg and had a
piece on exhibit at the Whitaker Center in Harrisburg in May
and June, 2008. She will exhibit her work at Penn State
Harrisburg in the fall of 2008. Her favorite artists are
Salvador Dali, Frida Kahlo, and Caravaggio.
Commings resides in Linglestown. She
supports her painting and writing addictions by operating a
pet-sitting business.

I
paint my own reality. The only thing I know is that I paint because
I need to, and I paint whatever passes through my head without any
other consideration.
