Mike's Rating System

1 - 5

Basically, the ratings are from 1 to 5, 5 being the best rating.

6

However, I will occasionally use a 6. A 6 is the highest rating that I will give to a movie. A 6 is a masterwork in Mike's view. A 6 is a desert island movie. A 6 is a movie that I've watched perhaps dozens of times, and will watch dozens more times.

You will notice that most of my ratings tend to be on the high side. Well, there's no reason to own a movie that you don't like, so it only makes sense that I rate most of my movies highly. A low rating on a movie that I own could mean that that movie is slated for removal from my collection, as I "clean house" and forever exile some movies every so often. Also, I collect certain directors that I like, and occasionally they will create a real dud. I generally don't get rid of these movies, but keep it around "for the collection." If you collect something, you know what I mean. Likewise, I collect certain genres, and sometimes there's a dud in the bunch. I generally keep these for the collection as well. It should be realized, though, that a poor rating from me does not necessarily mean that I don't think the movie is not worth watching or having. For instance, I don't own the movies Speed, Top Gun, or Days Of Thunder. To me, these movies are sheer crap. If someone were to give these movies to me, I'd either sell them to someone else or throw them in the trash. On my rating scale, they wouldn't register. They'd be rated a 0 or less. So, a 1 or 2 in my rating system is still better than what your average commercial movie would get from me.
