Original
(1905 - Present)
Martin's first key has undergone changes to the pivot, castings, and base finish. The standard base finish was black japanned until 1939 when it was changed to black crackle. In the Fifties it was changed to gray crackle. Today it's a black powder-coat finish. The Deluxe version with chromed base and jeweled movement (upper and lower trunion screws - the red top piece is for decoration only) was introduced in 1940. Shortages of chrome and brass during WWII caused the Deluxes to be produced with gray painted bases and tin name plates. |
