Treatment of cancer in the canine. Chemo-medical aspects - Karin Sorenmo CMV (pictured,Bottom Left). Radiologic aspects - Lillian Duda VMD. Dr. Sorenmo discussed the evaluation procedure they use to determine if a patient will benefit from chemo-medical agents. She stressed repeatedly that chemo-therapy will add time to a dogs life, but in most cases, does not cure the cancer. Therefore, the issue becomes when is the dog in a state where the chemo-therapy is only adding to its discomfort. Dr. Duda discussed why radiation is used, and how they apply it. She too addressed the issue of appropriateness of this treatment, and its possible side effects. Doctors Duda and Sorenmo can be contacted through the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine (215) 898-4680.
