Organ Cave, Pocahontas County, WV

November 9, 2003.  This trip consisted of four souls from Pennsylvania, Alan Horn, Karen and George Bange, Barry Duncan and me.  We got a fair start around 11:00 AM some of which was caused by me shutting the wrong half of my keychain inside the truck, right as we were ready to walk to the cave entrance from the truck.  All geared up and soiled from the previous day's adventure, we only hoped that the person living at the house where we acquired permission to park would have a coat hanger we could have.  He gave us one and after not too long, we were inside the truck.  It's sad but good that this procedure works.

Our plan  was to enter the Lipps entrance and head for the Fossil Room.  That's what we did, getting off track only once for Barry, Karen and George to visit the splendor of the Treasure Passage.  Since both Alan and I had seen the that part of the cave during our previous visit, we waited until they came back from that tunnel before proceeding through the TT Crawl.

In the midst of the TT Crawl, there is an offset in the tube.  In this offset is a shelf where apparently someone decided to create a small stage and create a scene for others to enjoy.  It doesn't appear to be from Les Miserables or Cats but was neat to see nonetheless.

Once we reached the Fossil Room we searched for the porcupine which has been documented as being stuck in flowstone.  We spread out in the large room, starting from the left and circling around.  The room is sizeable and has little leads and tight areas that had to be investigated so that the fossil could be found.  As it turned out after we searched and searched, the fossil was finally located about 20 feet from the entrance into the room, at the last part of the clockwise sweep.  There are many opportunities for photography in this room as well.  Here is some of what you might see:

The oddest thing about this formation is that the picture is oriented as the formation is found in the cave.  There was no obvious evidence that it had been placed this way.  A stalagmite with a helectite nest on top.  ???

These photos are of the same formation but from a slightly different angle.
