Wind Cave (also known as Cold Cave)
Alan Horn introduced me to this cave in Lancaster County, PA. I was
looking for a cave not too far from York that had big enough passages for a TV
camera and that would offer various dangerous things that we could show to Fox
43 News. The TV station contacted me about doing a story on safe caving
practices. I actually passed the contact information along to the other
executive committee members of the York Grotto and it ended up coming back to me
for action.
I was cautious about taking the media to a cave as we always strive not to
advertise cave locations or to have the story turn into an advertisement for
caving. I typed up a list of things that I wanted to cover and located a
few friends to go to the cave with the camera operator and reporter. I was
careful to invite only those people who I knew would have the proper equipment
and that would speak with knowledge if asked any questions by the
reporter. I had full intention of doing all the speaking but just in case
they asked the others about caving, I didn't want anything to go wrong.
As it turned out, we all met on time and the reporter was surprisingly, well
made up with hair and cosmetics just right. That was a first for me to
see.
The reporter soon
learned that Alan was the only one of the four cavers present which had been to
this particular cave. She decided that Alan would therefore make a good
spokesperson
and asked if he wouldn't mind being wired with a microphone. He accepted
and ended up doing most of the talking as they directed most of the questions
toward him. The rest of us were also interviewed and videotaped doing
various things before even getting into the cave.
We spent about three and a half hours at the cave getting shots of different
things, setting up a rappel rope to drop into the vertical entrance and retake
some footage after a few practices.
