Cleversburg Sink Cave

This is a gated and locked cave in the Shippensburg area.  I have seen very little of this cave as my two visits did not get us very far.  The water table in this cave fluctuates and prevents the majority of the cave from being explored unless you can go through sumps.  That is not something I am interested in trying yet.  Maybe during the next drought, we will go back and see how low the water is.

There is a fancy sign board announcing the cave, it's significance as a natural resource, who to contact to gain access to the cave, a map of the passages and more.

This was installed by the Franklin County Grotto.

The entrance gate is a bit difficult to open.  That circular hole is where you have to stick you hand down in to reach the lock.  Don't drop the key!!!
This sign says: This cave is a significant natural resource....

It appears as though this was part of an earlier entrance to the cave.  The square opening below the sign does not have a gate on it but could have had one at one time.

Kevin Dunleavy and I went one of the two times, the other time included Alan Horn.  We didn't know what to expect so we had our ropes with us.  It's nice to have a rope to get into and out of the first main room.  This room typically has a significant amount of water in it.... Enough that you will either swim or raft to get to the other side of the chasm.

Kevin and I are looking toward Alan (the white dot in the middle of the photo below) who just climbed up out of the water.  He was in pretty much up to his chin.  Kevin got just as wet.

After getting past the water, we didn't get much further into the cave before we decided that we didn't know which way to go.  Next time we'll get more pictures and see more of the cave.

I went back on November 24th, 2001.  See that adventure here.
