Elk Mountain
Bill Hunter and I really enjoy skiing in Vermont and last year
we made it to Vermont, only to get a phone call that his baby was sick and had
been taken to the hospital. He turned around and arrived at his house in
the wee hours.
This year (2002), I am expecting our baby anytime. A trip
so far from home would cause Janey to have the baby and I would miss it.
Instead, we decided on two days of semi-local skiing. One day we would ski
at Elk Mountain and another at Camelback. We didn't get to Camelback but
had some fun at Elk.
The biggest disappointment with Elk was that we bought tickets
which allowed us to stay all day and into the night. After exploring every
trail on the left side of the lifts, after a late lunch, we decided to check out
the right side. We eventually found some big ramps, like an alpine park
and by the time we got used to the jumps, they closed the trails off. It
was right around 4:10 PM. We did find another trail with ramps but they
had very hard landing areas and so we did not enjoy them as much.
Upon leaving I asked an employee why they had shut down several
trails (it seemed like the whole side we had yet to finish was closed) and I was
told that those trails are not lit. The only problem I had with that
excuse was that it was now 5:30 PM when I spoke with this person - still in
daylight. I felt like asking for a refund of the extra money we paid for
the night time skiing but considering it was probably only another $5 or so, I
decided to leave without a fuss.
We decided that we don't really need to go back there.
