Chinese Shar-Pei Health Concerns

• Amyloidosis - this is a genetic condition that most frequently results in death from kidney failure as young as 3 years old. A low protein diet, spaying/ neutering and avoidance of stress can extend life to approximately 7 years. There are currently no tests to screen potential parents and the warning signs are confusing at best. Pedigree research currently is the best avenue to reduce a pup's chances of developing this condition. The Chinese Shar-Pei Club of America Charitable Trust funds research into this disease. Also, Dr. Jeff Vidt, Chairman of the CSPCA Health Through Education Committee has just published a great site on the latest developments in the fight against FSF and Amyloidosis.
• Skin Problems - skin problems are not due to the wrinkles! No special care should be necessary between the folds. Skin problems in the breed are most commonly caused by hypothyroidism (low thyroid), a depressed autoimmune system, or allergies.
• Entropion - this is a condition where the eye-lashes come in contact with the surface of the eye. As puppies 3-6 weeks old, tacking can be done to "train" the eye-lashes in the right direction. This should not be done by default. This procedure may be repeated a couple of times, but if tacking ultimately fails to correct the problem, entropion surgery may be necessary. The entropion surgery ranges from $100-$500, and any Shar-Pei that undergoes it, should not be bred.
• Hip Dysplasia - any dog used for breeding should have its hips x-rayed to insure proper conformation. This condition can result in severe arthritis in adult dogs. Both parents should be certified by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA), PennHip or from the breeders' vet in writing.
